Caring for your Cavy
Here's what set up we have and what we do:
Our cavies are housed in pairs because they are very social creatures. Boys with boys, girls with girls. In our opinion the bigger the cage the better, they need room to run! We have a large cage with care fresh natural bedding on the bottom. We free feed them hay and give them guinea pig formulated pellet food, one small cup in the morning along with fresh fruits and veggies a few times a week. Guinea pigs can gain weight easily, so be sure to monitor and cut back slightly on the treats and pellets if your piggie is becoming over weight. Ours also have an igloo house as well as chew sticks and of course a water bottle. For fun, we give them toilet paper rolls stuffed with hay- they love to throw these around and chew on them. Each day when you feed, it is important to evaluate your piggie's health. Be observant in any changes so that if something is wrong you can catch it right away. We also have a play pen set up so they have even more room to run- they take turns in the play pen. We also cuddle, snuggle and handle them daily. Piggies are fun and great for first time pet owners. Any time we think of giving them a new fruit or vegetable we make sure and look it up online just to double check they can have it. Also, make sure to wash your fresh fruits and veggies very well, you don't want them getting sick.
